
Dr. Sotirios Despotis
Dr. Sotirios Despotis was born in Athens and received his B.A. from the Department of Theology of the School of Theology from the University of Athens, all the while studying Byzantine and European music. He continued his post-graduate studies at the Gutenberg University in Mainz (Germany), attending lectures and seminars regarding the Interpretation and Theology of the New Testament, in particular the Apocalypse of John by Professor O. Böcher. He received his Doctorate from the Department of Social Theology and Study of Religion (School of Theology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Thesis: “The Heavenly Worship at Rev. 4-5”), which also elected him as a Lecturer in 2001, a Professor in 2015 and Head of the Department of Social Theology and Study of Religion also in 2015. He teaches “Orthodoxy in the 20th Century” at the Hellenic Open University of Athens since 2005.
Despotis is also:
- a member of SNTS (Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas/Co-organizer of the 73rd Meeting of the SNTS in Athens)
- co-editor of the Biblical Studies Bulletin of the European Association of Biblical Studies co-editor, and
- co-editor of the Scientific Review of Post-Graduate Program ‘Studies in Orthodox Theology' of the Hellenic Open University.
Since 2015 he is the Head of the Department of Social Theology and Study of Religion.
